Great sports photos are fun to take and look at but you need to know how to leverage the camera settings to stop the action. Personally sports are my favorite thing to shoot. The emotion of the games and the moments that you can capture make it a very enjoyable experience, and I recommend it to any photographer looking to get some great shots.
Get close to the ground and shoot up. It makes the athlete look more heroic and eliminates bad backgrounds
Use fast shutter speed so the picture is clear usually 1/400 or 1/500 is best
If inside use auto white balance
Have more than just the athlete in the photo
All photos shown below are taken at 1/400 shutter speed except the last one which is taken at 1/500
What not to do
Take picture from standing position
Have high a long shutter speed
Have lighting be very bright
Have nothing but the athlete in the photo
These will result in a very boring photo with no emotion, and will not pull people in. An example of this is below
