How can I highlight a person’s individualism? I began by photographing people in different situations, i.e. the city, my school campus, and the photo studio where I was able to capture different forms of self-expression and representation. A lot of times, especially on social media, 'individualism' is curated through selfies. So next, I attempted to convey my view of individualism by isolating people within crowds, as well as metaphorically and physically shining a light on their faces. I learned that this allowed for a more authentic representation of my subject.
I experimented with the use of film and digital cameras with different types of lighting and shooting people in crowds allowed for different variations of who a person is. In addition I utilized the masking tool (#15) which enabled me to more clearly define my subjects amongst busy backgrounds. In some works, I used editing to revise my photo with the masking tool (#14). For some works, I had to ask people to pose a certain way (#10) which took practice in communicating with the subject.
