“How do insecurities control our thoughts?” Insecurities are the thief of happiness, and can control who we are and how we feel. My idea was to create a collection of pieces that shows the inner workings of the mind and how our insecurities and self-perception affect that. I have a passion for mental health advocacy and I was curious about how to express ideas surrounding this topic. Through research and experimentation, I learned that insecurities can consume one’s life, but also that there are ways to change your perception of self to be positive.
Through discussion with my peers, I have come to understand that as young women, we are constantly reminded of our insecurities, and taught to let them define us. I explored the challenges that come from battling insecurity with different techniques and mediums, such as collages, double exposure, and embroidery. Throughout the process, I refined my skill through practice with different embroidery techniques, as seen in image 8. I experimented with different mediums, such as collaging in image 2. Finally, I revised several works to arrive at final products, as seen in images 2, 8, and 5.
