I am a city person. I have always loved the commotion and the lights of the city. How, when walking down the street you can see everyone living their day to day lives, undisturbed by the commotion surrounding them. I am drawn to the slower shutters speeds, capturing movements in a still photo. I believe using a mid range shutter speed captures the energy of city better than a faster shutter speed.
I was on the highway at night taking photos and I saw the bright city skyline. My camera was set to a slower shutter speed when I took a photo of New York, which is image 1. I was inspired by the results. It captured the commotion that is the city’s energy through an abstract way, by using the light's motion, however it was still clear that I was photographing the city skyline. I decided to go into the city and experiment with shutter speed. I found for more abstract photos, which focused more on the movement of the light, like image 2 with 2 ½ seconds worked well. When developing my concentration I wanted to also try less abstract photos, and I started to try this with people, like image 11. I also wanted to capture the city through all aspects, so I focused on objects and cars, like image 12. When I wanted the light's movement to support the subject I was photographing I found 1 second shutter speed worked well, like image 12. Overall, the slower shutter speeds capture the commotion of the city perfectly.
