Needles
The smaller the better because holes in the image will be smaller
Bigger needles are necessary for thicker thread
Thread
Thicker: for stronger and more defined lines
Thinner: great for detail, will take more time and patience
Surface:
Normal letter paper
Pros:
works surprisingly well
holes are easy to make
Cons:
very delicate, you have to be careful not to rip or crease the paper.
most printers will print images in lower quality (this can be fixed with overlaying images on photoshop).
Photo paper:
Good quality when printing but holes are a bit harder to make.
Canvas:
Hard to poke but won’t completely puncture the paper
Flexible and not so delicate
I sometimes draw over the images using my phone
You can always go back and fill out any missing spaces
Starting to sew
2. Cut as much thread as you will be needing
If you run out, you can just cut more (the back of the paper might start to get messy but what matters is what is in front!)
Tips:
Place paper over a cushion when you make the holes
If paper rips, tape the back
If you mess up, you can always cut the thread and redo it by unsewing
When using thicker needles, don’t make the holes too close to each other because then it might rip
I personally prefer using black and white images so that colorful thread will pop out
